Big Picture Question:

“How can we be saved? We are only saved through faith in Jesus.”

Welcome:

Do any of you like to fish?
Have any of you ever caught a fish so big you needed help reeling it in?
Who helped you?
What’s the biggest fish you’ve ever seen?

Connection:

“In today’s story, Jesus helped some fishermen catch so many fish that their nets were breaking. Then Peter had an amazing response to Jesus. We’ll learn more about what Peter did in our Bible story.”

Introduce the Bible Story:

Big Picture Question:

“The last few times we met, we learned a big picture question: How can we be saved? Does anyone remember the answer?
We are only saved through faith in Jesus.”
“Everyone needs to be saved because everyone sins. But we must repent and believe in Jesus to be saved. We trust that only Jesus can save us from our sin.”
“In today’s Bible story, Peter knew he was a sinful man. But Jesus invited Peter to follow him. We can turn to Jesus for forgiveness and follow Him by faith.”

Review the Timeline:

“Do you remember why Jesus came? … … Before Jesus was born, the angel told Joseph to name Him Jesus because He would save His people from their sins. Jesus was born, dedicated, baptized, and tempted but He never sinned. He lived a sinless life for us by loving God and loving others perfectly.
Even when people rejected Jesus, He did not give up His mission to save sinners. He performed miracles to show people that He is the Son of God, and He taught people the good news of how to be saved. Today, we will learn about how Jesus showed others He is God in flesh who had come to save people from their sins.”

Learn the Bible Story

Luke 5:1-5

Luke 5:1–5 “1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.””
Question:
What was Jesus doing?
What was Peter doing?
What did Jesus ask Peter to do?
How did Peter respond?

Luke 5:6-8

Luke 5:6–8 “6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.””
Question:
Did Peter obey?
What happened when they cast their nets on the other side?
What did Peter respond?

Luke 5:9-11

Luke 5:9–11 “9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.”
Question:
Was Peter the only one there?
Who else was there with Peter?
What did Jesus tell all the men there?
What does it mean that they were going to be catching men?
How did Peter and all the other men respond?
